One and Two

“No man” they say, “is an island”

Though we’re fooled to thinking so

Retreat in shore and raise the bridge

Stand alone as a heritage

Of the pains of the past

Reaching into today

Building defences

To keep waves of love at bay

Can a human become as a castle

With portcullis and keep and deep moat

Such defences as strain

To protect and disarm

A tough skin intended

To keep all from harm

When the real shell’s created

To feel touch and pain

To be soft and responsive

For love’s tender refrain
